Fitness for Work Policy
v3.0
Purpose. This policy sets the requirements for drug and alcohol testing, fatigue management and medical fitness so that every person at a Deepridge site is fit to do their work safely.
1.Purpose
A person who is impaired by alcohol, drugs, fatigue or illness is a danger to themselves and everyone around them on a site with heavy mobile plant and explosives. This policy sets the standards for fitness for work and the testing and support that go with them.
2.Alcohol and drugs
The alcohol limit on all Deepridge sites is zero. Every person must present for random, pre-employment, post-incident and reasonable cause drug and alcohol testing when required. A positive result means the person will be removed from site and managed under the disciplinary and support procedures. Prescription medications that impair performance must be declared to the supervisor before shift.
3.Fatigue
Shifts must not exceed twelve and a half hours including travel on site, and workers must have a minimum of ten hours off between shifts. Workers must not commence a shift if they have had less than five hours sleep in the previous 24 hours, and must report to the supervisor if they feel fatigued during a shift. Supervisors will manage fatigue through task rotation, breaks and, where necessary, standing a worker down.
- Maximum roster of seven consecutive shifts
- Ten hours minimum between shifts
- Fatigue self-assessment at prestart
- Journey management for drive-in workers after night shift
4.Medical fitness
All workers must complete a pre-employment medical and periodic health monitoring as the mine health scheme requires, including hearing, lung function and, where applicable, coal dust exposure monitoring. Workers must declare any condition that affects their ability to work safely.
5.Support
Deepridge will provide confidential counselling and support to any worker who raises a drug, alcohol, fatigue or health concern before it becomes a safety event. Self-referral before testing will be treated as a health matter, not a disciplinary one.
